Quick answer
DeepSeek's own privacy policy (last updated 10 February 2026) says the app is run by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. in China. It collects your prompts, uploaded files, chat history and device and network details, and it stores that data in the People's Republic of China. It also uses your data to train its models, though it lists a right to opt out. The app isn't malware, but don't put personal, financial or work secrets into it. For full privacy, run DeepSeek's open models offline on your own PC instead.
The honest answer
"Safe" has two parts here. The first is whether the app itself is genuine. The official DeepSeek app from DeepSeek's own download page is a normal chatbot app, while fake "DeepSeek" apps and installers on other sites are a real risk. The second part, which is what most people mean, is what happens to the things you type. For that, the best source is DeepSeek's own privacy policy. Below is a plain summary of the version last updated on 10 February 2026. ToolsBharat has not audited the app. This guide only reports what the policy says.
What DeepSeek's privacy policy says
Who runs it
The services "are provided and controlled by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd., with its registered address in China."
What it collects
- Account data: date of birth (where applicable), username, email address and/or phone number, and password.
- Everything you put in: "text input, voice input, prompt, uploaded files, photos, feedback, chat history". The policy adds that DeepSeek will not extract voiceprints or facial-recognition data from your voice inputs or photos.
- Device and network data: device model, operating system, IP address, device identifiers, system language, crash reports and performance logs. It assigns you a device ID and a user ID and links your activity across devices.
- Usage logs: the features you use and the actions you take.
- Approximate location: based on your IP address. The policy says it won't take your precise location without explicit consent.
How it uses your data
The uses include running the service and "to train and improve our technology, such as our machine learning models and algorithms," including by "monitoring interactions and usage across your devices." It also says it may share data with law enforcement in urgent situations to protect health or life.
Who else gets it
- Service providers, including search APIs ("we will share your input keywords") and analytics providers.
- Entities in DeepSeek's corporate group, for storage, security, research and "foundation model training and optimization".
- Buyers or partners in a merger or sale, and law enforcement or public authorities where DeepSeek believes the law requires it.
- Anyone who sees a chat you share as a public link. The policy warns that shared chats published online can be picked up by web crawlers.
The policy states in capitals that DeepSeek does not do targeted advertising and does not "sell" personal data.
Where it's stored, and for how long
"We directly collect, process and store your Personal Data in People's Republic of China." Data is kept "for as long as you have an account", and longer where the law requires or DeepSeek has a legitimate business interest.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, the policy lists the right to access, correct and delete your data, to get a portable copy, and "the right to opt-out of using your Personal Data for training our models". You exercise these by emailing privacy@deepseek.com. You can also copy or delete your chat history in the app's settings. If you delete your account, it can't be reactivated.
What about India?
On 30 January 2025, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) published a statement from Union IT Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw. It said DeepSeek "can get hosted on Indian servers after security checks so that coders, developers & designers can take benefit of its Open Source code". That refers to DeepSeek's open models running on Indian infrastructure, not to the Chinese-hosted app.
As of 30 October 2026, we could not find any order on an official Indian government website that bans the DeepSeek app for the general public. News reports in early 2025 described an internal Finance Ministry note asking staff to avoid AI tools such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek on office devices. We could not find that note on an official government site, so we don't quote it. If you use a government or company device, follow your organisation's IT policy.
Steps to use DeepSeek more safely
- Get it only from official sources. DeepSeek's download page links its iOS app, its Android APK and the DeepSeek Harness desktop app for Windows and macOS. The web version is at chat.deepseek.com. See how to spot fake download sites.
- Don't paste sensitive information. The policy itself says: "We do not ask for, and you should not provide sensitive Personal Data". That includes Aadhaar, PAN or bank details, health records, client documents and passwords.
- Be careful with share links. Anything you publish through a shared chat URL can be indexed by web crawlers.
- Opt out of training if you want. The policy lists the right. Email privacy@deepseek.com to use it.
- Clean up. Delete old chats in settings, or delete your account if you've stopped using it.

Common problems
- "DeepSeek for PC" installers on random sites: the official Windows download on deepseek.com is DeepSeek Harness, and it comes from download.deepseek.com. Treat any other "DeepSeek.exe" with suspicion, and check the digital signature before running it.
- Can't find an option to stop training: the policy names the right but doesn't describe an app setting for it. Email privacy@deepseek.com.
- The answers contain wrong facts about you: the policy warns that outputs may not be accurate. You can ask for a correction or removal through the same email address.
