Quick answer

Windows already includes Hindi keyboards, so there's nothing to download. Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region, add Hindi, then add the Hindi Phonetic keyboard from Hindi's Language options. Switch with Windows key + Spacebar, type the word in English letters such as 'bagicha' and press Enter to get बगीचा. Hindi Traditional, an InScript-style layout, is installed by default.

You don't need to download anything

Many people search for a Hindi typing "software" for office work — applications, letters, notices. On Windows, you don't need one. Microsoft's documentation explains that Windows includes an Input Method Editor (IME) and keyboard layouts for entering Hindi in Devanagari script on a normal 101–105-key keyboard, and that using them doesn't require changing your Windows display language. Your menus stay in English; only the text you type changes.

Two options come with Windows:

  • Hindi Phonetic — type the word as it sounds, in English letters, and the IME suggests the Devanagari word;
  • Hindi Traditional — an InScript-style layout where each key types a Devanagari character directly.

Microsoft's old *Indic Language Input Tool* is no longer offered on its Bhashaindia downloads page, and many "Indic Input download" results are third-party or spam. The built-in keyboards are the safe choice.

Step 1: Add Hindi

These are Microsoft's steps, shown for Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings and select Time & language → Language & region.
  2. Select Add a language, choose Hindi from the list and select Next.
  3. Look at Optional language features. If you only want to type Hindi while keeping your current display language, Microsoft says none of them are necessary. Select Install.

By default, Hindi is installed with the Hindi Traditional keyboard.

Step 2: Add the Hindi Phonetic keyboard

  1. On the Language & region page, select the … (Options) icon next to Hindi and choose Language options.
  2. Select Add a keyboard and choose Hindi Phonetic.

Step 3: Switch between English and Hindi

The system tray shows the active layout — for example ENG. Press Windows logo key + Spacebar to cycle through installed layouts, or click the tray indicator and pick from the list, which Microsoft notes can be faster if you have more than two languages. When Hindi is active, the tray shows हिं instead of ENG. If you've installed both Hindi keyboards, the list shows the language and the layout name together.

Step 4: Type with Hindi Phonetic

  1. Switch to Hindi Phonetic (the tray shows हिं).
  2. Type the word's transliteration with the English keys. As you type, the IME shows Devanagari suggestions.
  3. Press Enter to accept the first suggestion, or use the cursor keys to choose a different one.

Microsoft's example is the word for garden, बगीचा, which can be transliterated as *bagicha* or *bageecha*. Type bagicha, check the top suggestion, and press Enter.

Hindi Traditional: the same word, key by key

With Hindi Traditional selected, each key types a character. Microsoft shows बगीचा typed on a US keyboard as:

  • y → ब
  • i → ग
  • r → ी (vowel sign ii)
  • ; → च
  • e → ा (vowel sign aa)

Traditional suits people who already know InScript typing. Phonetic is easier if you think in English spellings.

If something doesn't work

  • Windows key + Spacebar doesn't reach Hindi: that shortcut only cycles through layouts in the Preferred languages list in Settings. If Hindi isn't listed there, repeat Step 1; if only Hindi Traditional appears, repeat Step 2 to add Hindi Phonetic.
  • You get English letters instead of Devanagari: the tray still says ENG. Switch until it shows हिं, or pick the layout from the tray list.
  • Phonetic typing gives the wrong word: before pressing Enter, use the cursor keys to choose another suggestion, or try another spelling — Microsoft's example accepts both *bagicha* and *bageecha*.
  • You type InScript already: use Hindi Traditional, which Windows installs with Hindi by default.

Practical tips for office work

  • Check the tray before you type — if it says ENG, you'll get English letters.
  • In phonetic mode, look at the suggestions before pressing Enter; similar-sounding words may appear, and the arrow keys let you pick the right one.
  • The keyboards are part of Windows itself, so there's no installer to keep updated and nothing to download from unknown sites.

Settings → Time & language → Language & region

  • Hindi Phonetic — शब्द जैसा बोला जाता है वैसा अंग्रेज़ी अक्षरों में लिखें, और IME देवनागरी शब्द सुझाता है;
  • Hindi Traditional — InScript

  1. Settings खोलें और Time & language → Language & region चुनें।

  2. Add a keyboard चुनें और Hindi Phonetic चुनें।

  1. Hindi Phonetic

Hindi Traditional:

  • y → ब
  • i → ग
  • r → ी (ई की मात्रा)
  • ; → च
