Quick answer

Right-click the installer, choose Properties and open the Digital Signatures tab. The name under 'Name of signer' is the company that signed the file; select it and click Details to see whether Windows says the signature is OK. No tab means the file is unsigned. An untrusted-root message is usually a certificate trust problem on your PC, not proof of malware.

What a digital signature tells you

Most Windows installers from established companies carry an Authenticode signature: a cryptographic seal the developer adds with a code-signing certificate. It answers two questions. Who published this file? And has it been changed since it was signed? If even one byte is modified after signing, Windows no longer reports the signature as valid.

A signature does not mean the software is safe or useful — any company that obtains a certificate can sign a program. What it gives you is a name: you can see which company stands behind the file and whether that name matches the developer you expected.

Check the signature in File Explorer

  1. Right-click the downloaded installer (.exe or .msi) and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab. If there is no such tab, the file is not signed (see "What Unsigned means" below).
  3. Under Signature list, read the Name of signer. It should be the developer or its company — the same name you see on the developer's official website.
  4. Select the signature and click Details. At the top, Windows should say "This digital signature is OK."
  5. Optional: click View Certificate to see who issued the certificate and its validity dates.

Look at the Timestamp column too. A timestamped signature stays valid after the certificate itself expires, because the timestamp shows the file was signed while the certificate was still valid.

This works for drivers as well. The India Hub's ePass2003 token middleware, for example, should show FEITIAN Technologies — the token's maker — as the signer.

Check it with PowerShell

For a quick, copy-paste check, open PowerShell in the download folder and run:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature .\setup.exe | Format-List Status, StatusMessage, SignerCertificate

The Status line is what matters:

  • Valid — signed, unchanged since signing, and the certificate chains to a root that Windows trusts.
  • NotSigned — the file has no signature.
  • HashMismatch — the file was changed after it was signed. Do not run it.
  • NotTrusted or UnknownError — a signature exists, but Windows could not confirm a trusted certificate chain (see the section on untrusted chains below).

The SignerCertificate line shows the subject, which includes the signer's name.

What "Unsigned" means

An unsigned installer is not automatically dangerous. Code-signing certificates cost money and have to be renewed, so some small open-source projects and individual developers ship unsigned files. Windows then shows "Unknown publisher" in the User Account Control prompt, and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may warn you, because a file without an established reputation is treated as higher risk.

For an unsigned file, the SHA-256 hash becomes your main check: compare it with the value on the developer's official site, if the developer publishes one.

What *is* a red flag: a file that claims to come from a large company but is unsigned, or is signed by an unrelated name. Large software companies sign their installers; a "browser setup" signed by an unknown individual is not the real browser.

Why an untrusted chain is not the same as malware

Sometimes the signature exists but the certificate window says something like "A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted", or PowerShell reports NotTrusted or UnknownError. That means your PC could not link the signer's certificate to a root authority it trusts. Common causes:

  • The PC has been offline for a long time or blocks Windows certificate updates, so a newer root certificate is missing.
  • The system date and time are wrong, so certificates look not yet valid or already expired.
  • The certificate comes from an authority that Windows does not trust by default.

None of these prove the file is malicious. Correct the date and time, connect to the internet and check again. If the message stays, compare the file's hash with the developer's official value before you install. The reverse also holds: a valid signature does not prove a file is harmless. It only tells you who signed it.

A quick routine before every install

  1. Download only from the developer's own website.
  2. Check that the Name of signer matches the developer.
  3. If the file is unsigned, compare its SHA-256 hash with the developer's published value.
  4. Read every installer screen and decline offers you didn't ask for.

File Explorer

  3. Signature list में Name of signer पढ़ें।
सबसे ऊपर Windows को "This digital signature is OK."

Get-AuthenticodeSignature .\setup.exe | Format-List Status, StatusMessage, SignerCertificate

"Unsigned"

Untrusted chain

कभी-कभी सिग्नेचर होता है, लेकिन सर्टिफ़िकेट विंडो में "A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted" जैसा मैसेज आता है, या PowerShell NotTrusted या UnknownError दिखाता है।

Frequently asked questions

There is no Digital Signatures tab in Properties. What does that mean?
The file is not code-signed. That alone doesn't make it malicious, but you should compare its SHA-256 hash with the value on the developer's official site before running it.
Does a valid signature mean the program is safe?
No. It confirms who signed the file and that it hasn't changed since. Whether the software is trustworthy depends on that company.
Why does Windows say the certificate root is not trusted?
Usually because the PC is missing a root certificate update or its clock is wrong. Fix the date and time, go online and check again; it is not, by itself, a sign of malware.
