How to spot fake download sites and bundled installers

Download software only from the developer's own website. Warning signs of a fake or bundling site include look-alike domains, pages full of large 'Download' buttons, a small 'downloader' instead of the real installer, extra offers during setup and 'free' copies of paid software. Before running a file, check its digital signature and, when the developer publishes one, its SHA-256 hash.
Why fake download sites exist
Search for almost any free program and you will find pages that are not run by its developer. Some are harmless copies. Many make money from advertising, from "download managers" that install extra software, or from worse. This is one reason Microsoft Defender SmartScreen exists: it warns about sites reported for phishing or malware, and about downloaded files that are not well known.
A few habits protect you from most of these tricks.
Sign 1: The domain isn't the developer's
Before you click Download, read the address bar.
- Know the real address. VLC comes from videolan.org, LibreOffice from libreoffice.org and 7-Zip from 7-zip.org. Look-alike sites add words ("free-download"), change the ending (.net instead of .org) or swap a letter.
- Search ads can appear above the real result. Check the domain shown under the ad, not the headline.
- Indian government utilities come from government portals — emSigner and the GST offline tool from gst.gov.in, the ITR utilities from incometax.gov.in.
Sign 2: Many big "Download" buttons
Pages crowded with large green buttons usually mix advertisements with the real link, which is often a plain text link. If clicking opens a new tab, a pop-up or a "your PC is infected" warning, close the page — that is an advert, not your download.
Sign 3: A tiny "downloader" instead of the installer
Some sites hand you a small .exe that then "downloads" the real program and offers extras on the way. Compare the file name and size with what the developer's own page offers. Size alone isn't proof — a few official installers are also small online installers — so the developer's domain and the file's signature are what count.
Sign 4: Extra offers inside the installer
Bundled installers add screens offering a browser toolbar, a "PC optimiser", an antivirus trial or a new home page, often with the box already ticked. Choose Custom or Advanced setup when offered, read every screen and untick anything you didn't ask for. If an offer can't be declined, cancel the installation and get the installer from the developer's site instead.
Sign 5: "Free" paid software, cracks and patched drivers
"Free download" of paid software, keygens, "activators" and cracked or modded versions are a classic route for malware — and they are illegal to distribute. In India, also watch for "patched" RD services and DSC drivers shared on WhatsApp or YouTube. Always use the device maker's site or the Certifying Authority that issued your DSC.
Sign 6: The file type doesn't match
Turn on file extensions in File Explorer (Windows 11: View → Show → File name extensions). A "document" called invoice.pdf.exe is a program. Windows installers are normally .exe or .msi files; a program download that arrives as a .scr, .bat or .vbs file, or inside a password-protected .zip, is a warning sign.
Check the file yourself before running it
- Signature: right-click the file → Properties → Digital Signatures. The signer should be the developer. See how to check a digital signature.

- Antivirus: keep Microsoft Defender or your antivirus switched on, and scan the file before opening it.
- SmartScreen: "Windows protected your PC" means the file has no established reputation. It isn't proof of malware, but don't choose Run anyway unless the file came from the developer's own site and its signature or hash checks out.

पेड सॉफ़्टवेयर का "फ़्री डाउनलोड", keygen, "activator" और क्रैक्ड या मॉडेड वर्ज़न मैलवेयर फैलाने का पुराना रास्ता हैं — और इन्हें बाँटना ग़ैरक़ानूनी भी है। भारत में WhatsApp या YouTube पर शेयर होने वाली "पैच्ड" RD सर्विस और DSC ड्राइवर से भी सावधान रहें। हमेशा डिवाइस मेकर की साइट या उस Certifying Authority की साइट इस्तेमाल करें जिसने आपका DSC जारी किया।
संकेत 6: फ़ाइल का टाइप मेल नहीं खाता
