Where the real ChatGPT app for Windows comes from
OpenAI distributes the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows through the Microsoft Store. OpenAI's current docs describe one desktop app that combines everyday Chat, Work (research, documents, spreadsheets) and Codex (software development). It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Requirements
- Windows: OpenAI's help centre lists "Windows 10 (x64 and arm64) version 17763.0 or higher".
- For Codex inside the app: OpenAI's Windows sandbox page rates Windows 11 as "Recommended" and a recent, fully updated Windows 10 as "Best effort". Older Windows 10 builds are "Not recommended".
- Microsoft Store access: the app installs through the Store. On a managed office PC where the Store is blocked, your IT team can deploy it instead.
- A ChatGPT account: you sign in after installing. Which models and features you get depends on your plan. On OpenAI's Codex pricing page, the Free and Go plans list Codex in the desktop app (subject to rollout), and Plus and higher plans include more.
To check your Windows build, press Win + R, type winver and press Enter.
Step-by-step: install ChatGPT on Windows
- Open OpenAI's download page, chatgpt.com/download, and choose Windows. OpenAI's Windows docs point to the Microsoft Store installer for the app.
- Click Get or Install in the Microsoft Store.
- If you prefer the command line, open PowerShell and run OpenAI's command instead:
winget install --id 9PLM9XGG6VKS -s msstore - Open ChatGPT from the Start menu and sign in with your ChatGPT account.
- Pick what you want to do. For a quick question, select ChatGPT and then Chat. For documents and research, switch to Work. For coding with your project files, choose Codex.
- Optional: OpenAI's help article describes a companion window that opens with Alt + Space while the app is running. If another program already uses that shortcut, change it under Settings > App > Companion window hotkey.
If you'll use Codex in the app
- Codex runs commands natively in PowerShell inside a Windows sandbox. To keep sandbox protection on, select Ask for approval beneath the message box before you send a task. OpenAI warns that full access mode isn't limited to your project folder and could cause data loss.
- OpenAI suggests installing common developer tools with winget:

Troubleshooting
- The Store is blocked on an office PC: OpenAI's deployment guide lets IT install the app through Intune or Configuration Manager, using the Store integration or an offline MSIX package. Ask your IT team.
- The app misbehaves or won't open: reset it. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find ChatGPT, click the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options and then Reset.
- Alt + Space doesn't open the companion window: another app has claimed the shortcut. Choose a different hotkey in the app's settings.
npm.ps1 cannot be loaded because running scripts is disabled: this happens when Codex or the built-in terminal runs npm. OpenAI's suggested fix isSet-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned. Read Microsoft's execution policy guide first.- Codex needs administrator rights for a command: start the app itself with Run as administrator from the Start menu. The Codex agent inherits that permission level, so only do this when you need to.
- Git features are unavailable: install Git with
winget install Git.Git.
To uninstall, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find ChatGPT and choose Uninstall.
