Quick answer
WebView2 Runtime is Microsoft's Edge-based engine that Windows apps use to show web content inside the app; Outlook's Room Finder and Meeting Insights are examples. Microsoft preinstalls it on all Windows 11 devices, installed it on eligible Windows 10 devices, and it updates itself. Keep it: Microsoft says apps that rely on it lose those features without it. If an app says it's missing, install the Evergreen Runtime from Microsoft's WebView2 page.
What it is
Microsoft describes the WebView2 Runtime as a redistributable runtime that serves as the web platform for WebView2 apps, "similar to Visual C++ or the .NET Runtime". It contains modified Microsoft Edge binaries tuned and tested for apps. After it's installed it doesn't appear as a browser: there's no desktop shortcut and no Start menu entry.
Apps use it to show web-based screens inside a normal desktop window. Microsoft 365 is a clear example: Microsoft says Outlook features such as Room Finder and Meeting Insights, and Office Add-ins, rely on it. In Task Manager you may see several Microsoft Edge WebView2 entries running under the Outlook process; the runtime's file is msedgewebview2.exe.
Three things it doesn't do, according to Microsoft: it doesn't install the Edge browser, it doesn't need Edge to be installed, and it doesn't change your default browser.
Why it's on your PC
- Windows 11: Microsoft says the Evergreen Runtime is preinstalled on all Windows 11 devices as part of the operating system.
- Windows 10: Microsoft installed it on all eligible Windows 10 devices.
- Microsoft 365 Apps: since April 2021 Microsoft has installed it on Windows devices with Microsoft 365 Apps version 2101 or later.
- Other apps from Microsoft and other companies can install it too, and they all share one copy.
It appears in Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features as Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. It updates itself automatically with the same updates as Microsoft Edge; Microsoft's Microsoft 365 page says updates arrive a few times a month and are usually 5 MB to 30 MB.
Should you uninstall it?
Leave it installed. Microsoft says that if the runtime isn't on the device, users can't use the Office features that rely on it, and it recommends allowing it to be installed. Because it's one shared copy, removing it affects every app that uses it, not just one. None of the Microsoft pages cited below give home users steps to remove it; they treat it as something apps depend on.
If an app says WebView2 is missing (or opens blank)
- Check whether it's installed in Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Download it from Microsoft. Open Microsoft's WebView2 page; our WebView2 Runtime listing links to it. Choose the Evergreen Bootstrapper (about 2 MB; it downloads the runtime that matches your device's architecture, so it needs internet) or the Evergreen Standalone Installer for an offline PC (x64, x86 or ARM64). The Fixed Version packages are for developers to bundle with their apps.
- Run the installer. Microsoft says running it from an elevated (administrator) prompt installs it for all users; otherwise it installs for your account only.
- Restart the app. Microsoft notes an app picks up a new runtime version when it's restarted.
If that didn't work
- Edge updates are blocked at work. Microsoft says Edge and the WebView2 Runtime have separate update policies, so blocking Edge updates doesn't stop WebView2 updating unless an admin disables that too.
- You manage Office for an organisation. Microsoft lets admins stop new automatic installs in the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center (Customization → Device Configuration → Modern Apps Settings → Microsoft Edge WebView2, clear Enable automatic installation of WebView2 Runtime). It won't remove existing installs, and Office features that need WebView2 won't be available.
- Skip "WebView2 offline installer" mirror sites. Microsoft's own page has the standalone installer.
Microsoft, WebView2 Runtime को एक redistributable runtime बताता है जो WebView2 ऐप के लिए वेब प्लेटफ़ॉर्म का काम करता है, "similar to Visual C++ or the .NET Runtime"। इसमें ऐप के लिए तैयार और टेस्ट किए गए, बदले हुए Microsoft Edge binaries होते हैं। इंस्टॉल होने के बाद यह ब्राउज़र की तरह नहीं दिखता: न डेस्कटॉप शॉर्टकट, न Start मेन्यू में एंट्री।
यह Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features में Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime के नाम से दिखता है।
Microsoft, admins को Microsoft 365 Apps admin center में नए automatic install रोकने देता है (Customization → Device Configuration → Modern Apps Settings → Microsoft Edge WebView2, फिर Enable automatic installation of WebView2 Runtime हटाएँ)।
Frequently asked questions
- Can I uninstall Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime?
- It isn't recommended. Microsoft includes it in Windows 11, and says apps that rely on it, such as Outlook's Room Finder and Meeting Insights, can't offer those features without it.
- Is WebView2 the same as the Edge browser?
- No. It uses Edge's engine, but Microsoft says it doesn't install the browser, doesn't need Edge installed and doesn't change your default browser. It also has its own update policy.
- Why do I see many 'Microsoft Edge WebView2' processes in Task Manager?
- Apps that use WebView2 run it for their web-based screens. Microsoft notes, for example, that several WebView2 instances can run under the Outlook process.
