Quick answer

To install Claude Code on Windows, open PowerShell and run irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex, then open a new terminal and run claude --version to confirm it worked. Anthropic also lists a Command Prompt command and winget install Anthropic.ClaudeCode. You need Windows 10 version 1809 or later on a 64-bit PC, at least 4 GB of RAM, an internet connection and a paid Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan or a Console account. The free Claude plan does not include Claude Code.

What you need before you start

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding assistant that runs in your terminal. It reads your project, edits files and runs commands after you approve them. Anthropic's setup page lists these requirements:

  • Windows: Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows Server 2019 or later. It needs a 64-bit (x64 or ARM64) PC. Anthropic's troubleshooting page says 32-bit Windows is not supported.
  • Hardware: 4 GB of RAM or more.
  • Network: an internet connection. Claude Code works with Anthropic's servers, so it does not run offline.
  • Shell: PowerShell or Command Prompt (CMD) on Windows.
  • Location: a country on Anthropic's supported list. India is on it.
  • Account: a Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, or an Anthropic Console (API) account. Anthropic says plainly that the free Claude plan does not include Claude Code. Companies can also connect it to Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry.

You don't need administrator rights. Git for Windows is optional, but Anthropic recommends it: with Git for Windows installed, Claude Code can use Git Bash for its Bash tool. Without it, Claude Code runs commands through PowerShell instead.

Install Claude Code with PowerShell (recommended)

  1. Open the Start menu, type PowerShell and open Windows PowerShell. Don't open the entry that ends in (x86), because that one runs as 32-bit. Your prompt should start with PS C:\Users\YourName>.
  2. Paste this command and press Enter: irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex
  3. Wait. Anthropic notes that the installer shows no progress while it downloads, so a quiet window doesn't mean it's stuck.
  4. When it finishes, close the window and open a new terminal window. A window that was already open keeps the old PATH and won't find the new command.
  5. Run claude --version. A working install prints a version number.
  6. Go to the folder of a project you want to work on, for example cd D:\Projects\my-app, and run claude.
  7. The first time, Claude Code opens your browser so you can log in with your Claude account. If the browser doesn't open, press c in the terminal to copy the login link and paste it into a browser yourself.

For a deeper health check at any time, run claude doctor. It prints install and settings diagnostics without starting a session.

Other ways to install it on Windows

  • Command Prompt (CMD): your prompt shows C:\Users\YourName> without "PS". Run: curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.cmd -o install.cmd && install.cmd && del install.cmd
  • WinGet: winget install Anthropic.ClaudeCode. WinGet installs don't update themselves, so run winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode now and then.
  • WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux): open your WSL distribution and run the Linux installer inside it: curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash. Anthropic's table says sandboxed command execution is supported in WSL 2 but not in native Windows or WSL 1.
  • No terminal at all: Anthropic also offers the Claude desktop app for Windows, which lets you use Claude Code through a graphical window.

On macOS and Linux, the same curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash command is the native installer, and Homebrew users can run brew install --cask claude-code.

How updates work

The PowerShell, CMD and Linux installers set up a "native" install that updates itself in the background. The new version takes effect the next time you start Claude Code. To update straight away, run claude update. WinGet and Homebrew installs need a manual upgrade.

Troubleshooting common install errors

  • 'irm' is not recognized: you are in Command Prompt, not PowerShell. Either open PowerShell and run the PowerShell command, or use the CMD command above.
  • The token '&&' is not a valid statement separator: you pasted the CMD command into PowerShell. Use irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex instead.
  • A parameter cannot be found that matches parameter name 'fsSL': you ran the macOS/Linux command in PowerShell, where curl means something else. Use the PowerShell command.
  • The command prints script text and nothing installs: you ran only half of it. Paste the whole line, including | iex.
  • 'claude' is not recognized after installing: first open a new window. If it still fails, check that the program exists with Test-Path "$env:USERPROFILE\.local\bin\claude.exe". If that prints True, the folder isn't on your PATH: open Environment Variables from Windows settings, add %USERPROFILE%\.local\bin to your User PATH and restart the terminal.
  • Claude Code does not support 32-bit Windows: you probably opened Windows PowerShell (x86). Close it, open Windows PowerShell without "(x86)" and run the installer again. If your Windows really is 32-bit, Claude Code won't run on it.
  • The process cannot access the file ... because it is being used by another process: another installer window or an antivirus scan is holding the download. Close other PowerShell windows, wait a minute, then run Remove-Item -Recurse -Force "$env:USERPROFILE\.claude\downloads" and install again.
  • Typing claude opens the desktop app instead: an older Claude Desktop version registered its own Claude.exe. Anthropic's fix is to update Claude Desktop to the latest version.
  • API Error: 403 after logging in: check that your Pro or Max subscription is active at claude.ai/settings. On a Console account, an admin must give you the "Claude Code" or "Developer" role.

  3. इंतज़ार करें। Anthropic के मुताबिक़ डाउनलोड के दौरान इंस्टॉलर कोई प्रोग्रेस नहीं दिखाता, इसलिए विंडो शांत दिखे तो इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि वह अटक गया है।
  4. इंस्टॉल पूरा होने पर विंडो बंद करें और नई टर्मिनल विंडो खोलें। पहले से खुली विंडो पुराना PATH ही रखती है और नया कमांड नहीं ढूँढ पाती।
  5. claude --version चलाएँ। इंस्टॉल ठीक है तो एक वर्ज़न नंबर दिखेगा।
  6. जिस प्रोजेक्ट पर काम करना है, उसके फ़ोल्डर में जाएँ, जैसे cd D:\Projects\my-app, और claude चलाएँ।
  7. पहली बार Claude Code आपका ब्राउज़र खोलेगा ताकि आप अपने Claude अकाउंट से लॉग-इन कर सकें। ब्राउज़र न खुले तो टर्मिनल में c दबाकर लॉग-इन लिंक कॉपी करें और ख़ुद ब्राउज़र में पेस्ट करें।

Windows पर इंस्टॉल करने के दूसरे तरीके

  • Command Prompt (CMD): यहाँ प्रॉम्प्ट में "PS" के बिना C:\Users\YourName> दिखता है। यह चलाएँ: curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.cmd -o install.cmd && install.cmd && del install.cmd
  • WinGet: winget install Anthropic.ClaudeCode। WinGet वाला इंस्टॉल अपने-आप अपडेट नहीं होता, इसलिए बीच-बीच में winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode चलाते रहें।

अपडेट कैसे होते हैं

PowerShell, CMD और Linux इंस्टॉलर एक "नेटिव" इंस्टॉल बनाते हैं, जो बैकग्राउंड में ख़ुद अपडेट होता है। नया वर्ज़न अगली बार Claude Code शुरू करने पर लागू होता है। तुरंत अपडेट करना हो तो claude update चलाएँ। WinGet और Homebrew वाले इंस्टॉल को हाथ से अपग्रेड करना पड़ता है।

इंस्टॉल की आम गड़बड़ियाँ और हल
