Our verdict
WinMTR runs a continuous traceroute and shows loss and latency for every hop, which makes it the standard test ISPs and game support desks ask customers to run. It is tiny, portable and needs no admin rights. The official home is winmtr.net, which links to the WinMTR-Official GitHub repository. The current version, 0.92, is old (its code dates from 2011) and the project describes itself as barely maintained, but it still does the job. Other 'WinMTR' builds on GitHub are unofficial forks.
Key features
- Live per-hop packet loss and latency
- Copy or export results as text or HTML to send to your ISP
- Portable: 32-bit and 64-bit exe in one ZIP
Pros
- Pro: Free, tiny and portable
- Pro: Results ISPs understand
Cons
- Con: Barely maintained; no IPv6 in the official build
- Con: Loss on a middle hop alone is often harmless and can be misread

FAQ
How do I read WinMTR results?
Look at the last hop (the destination). If loss starts at one hop and continues on every hop after it, that is real loss. If a middle hop shows loss but later hops do not, that router is just de-prioritising replies.
Is there WinMTR for Mac?
No. WinMTR is Windows-only; on macOS and Linux the original command-line 'mtr' does the same job.
