It does nothing on its own: install it, then start face authentication from the app that needs it and FaceRD is called from there. On Android it has no icon of its own. Only install UIDAI's listing (package in.gov.uidai.facerd on Play) — both stores have many look-alike face apps.

Is there an Aadhaar FaceRD app for iPhone?
Yes. UIDAI publishes AadhaarFaceRD on the Apple App Store — seller UIDAI, free, requires iOS 14.0 or later (version 1.3.8 on the listing on 31 October 2026). Like the Android app it does not work on its own: the listing says it needs a compatible AUA/KUA app, meaning the app of the organisation asking for face authentication. The Jeevan Pramaan Face App manual for iPhone, for example, says to install AadhaarFaceRD from the App Store first, then the Jeevan Pramaan Face App, and do the face scan from there. UIDAI's Authentication page links only the Android FaceRD, so search the App Store for 'AadhaarFaceRD' and check that the seller is UIDAI.
I installed AadhaarFaceRD but can't find the app icon. Is it broken?
No. UIDAI's Face RD is a background service with no launcher icon. It opens automatically when an app such as Jeevan Pramaan or the Aadhaar app starts face authentication. You can see it under Settings → Apps.
