Our verdict
Older camcorder clips, DVD rips, TV recordings and some .ts/.m2ts files use MPEG-2, which recent Windows versions don't always play out of the box. This free Microsoft extension adds MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 decoding to Media Player and other Windows apps; Microsoft's listing says it may also help with some .mkv and .avi files.
